Welcome to our class page.

Here you will find all you need to know about Year 1, see some of the amazing work the children have produced as well as our awards.

Some important things for the year:

• PE day is Thursday - Children to come in their PE kit (black joggers/shorts, a white T-shirt, black hoodie and trainers)
• Reading books will be changed in accordance with children's RWI groups
• Reading books and diaries should be in school each day.
• Children to be heard read at home three times per week
• Children will receive RWI sound. There are for the children to practice the sound they have been learning in school. This can remain at home for future use.

 Hank the Tank

Hank is our class Hippo. He loves going home with children each week to join in with family life. Please add pictures and text to his book so your child can share this with the rest of the class

RWI

At Moorcroft Wood Academy, we use Read Write Inc. (RWI) to give our children the strongest possible start to their reading and writing journey.

Children are carefully grouped according to their phonics knowledge and reading needs, ensuring that teaching is closely matched to their individual stage of learning. During RWI sessions, children learn new sounds, practise blending sounds together to read words and develop their reading, spelling and writing skills.

When your child learns a new sound, they may bring home a sound sheet to practise. We encourage families to spend a little time reading the words together and ticking them off as your child becomes confident. These sheets do not need to be returned to school and can be kept at home so that sounds can be revisited and practised regularly.

We also provide additional opportunities to support children with their phonics, including an after-school phonics club during the Spring Term. Further information about this will be shared with families nearer the time.

Phonics is a vital part of every child’s learning journey. Becoming a confident reader opens the door to the entire curriculum and gives children the skills to learn, explore and discover independently.

Parents and carers play an incredibly important part in this journey. Regularly listening to your child read and practising their sounds at home can make a real difference to their confidence, fluency and progress.

Together, we can help every child develop the skills and confidence to become a successful, lifelong reader.

English

At Moorcroft Wood Academy, we aim to inspire a love of reading and writing by immersing our children in a wide range of engaging, high-quality texts.

As part of our English curriculum, children are introduced to carefully selected texts that provide exciting and meaningful opportunities for writing. Using our ‘I’m a Clever Writer’ approach, children are explicitly taught the skills they need to become confident and successful writers. They explore vocabulary, sentence structure, grammar and a range of writing techniques before applying these independently.

Each week culminates in a ‘Star Write’, where children have the opportunity to showcase their learning. They independently apply the skills taught throughout the week to produce purposeful writing inspired by the text they have explored.

Reading for pleasure is also at the heart of school life. Every class enjoys daily story time, giving children the opportunity to experience a wide variety of books, authors and genres. Through sharing stories together, we aim to nurture imagination, develop vocabulary and, most importantly, inspire a lifelong love of reading.

Through our English curriculum, we strive to develop enthusiastic readers and confident, creative writers who are proud to share their ideas and express themselves.

 

Maths

At Moorcroft Wood Academy, we follow a carefully sequenced spiral maths curriculum, enabling children to revisit key concepts regularly, strengthen their understanding and build upon the foundations of previous learning. This approach helps children to make connections between mathematical ideas and develop secure, lasting knowledge.

We encourage a concrete, pictorial and abstract approach through our Build It, Draw It, Solve It model. Children begin by using practical resources and manipulatives to explore mathematical concepts and develop a deeper understanding. They then progress to pictorial representations, helping them to visualise their thinking, before applying their knowledge confidently to abstract calculations and problems.

Throughout our maths curriculum, children are encouraged to develop their fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills, explain their mathematical thinking and apply their knowledge in a range of contexts.

Our aim is to develop confident, resilient mathematicians who are not afraid to make mistakes, enjoy being challenged and have the knowledge and skills needed to succeed.

 

Curriculum

At Moorcroft Wood Academy, we immerse our children in a rich and engaging geography and history curriculum that inspires curiosity about the world around them and the people, places and events that have shaped it.

With the help of our curriculum mascots, George the Geographer and Hilda the Historian, children develop a wide range of geographical and historical knowledge and skills. They are encouraged to ask questions, explore evidence, investigate different places and periods, make connections and think critically about the past and present.

Our carefully planned termly units allow children to explore each topic in depth, building upon their prior learning and developing secure, lasting knowledge. Each unit is driven by an engaging Big Question, giving children a clear purpose for their learning and encouraging them to use the knowledge and skills they have developed to form well-reasoned answers.

Through our geography and history curriculum, we aim to develop knowledgeable, curious and confident learners who understand their place in the world and have a strong appreciation of the people, places and events that have helped shape it.

 

 

 

Science

At Moorcroft Wood Academy, we immerse our children in a rich and engaging science curriculum that inspires curiosity and encourages them to explore the world around them.

Through carefully planned half-termly units, children develop a secure understanding of key scientific knowledge while progressively building the skills needed to work and think like scientists. Our curriculum provides opportunities for children to question, investigate, observe, predict, record and draw conclusions, enabling them to deepen their understanding of each scientific concept.

Practical learning is at the heart of our approach. Each unit provides opportunities for children to apply their knowledge through hands-on investigations and experiments. Children are encouraged to make predictions, test their ideas, discuss their findings and use scientific evidence to explain what they have discovered.

Through our science curriculum, we aim to develop knowledgeable, inquisitive and confident learners who are excited to investigate, discover and understand the world around them.
