PE and Sport Premium

PE at Moorcroft Wood

At Moorcroft Wood Primary School, we are committed to promoting healthy, active lifestyles for all children. Through high-quality Physical Education, we encourage pupils to develop independence, respect for others, and a positive attitude towards challenge and achievement.

We work closely with local sports clubs and the Lighthouse Trust to provide pathways for children to continue participating in sports they enjoy beyond their time at school, or to further develop talents they show particular aptitude in. By creating these strong community links, we aim to inspire confidence, motivation, and a lifelong love of sport and physical activity.

Intent

At Moorcroft Wood Academy, we are proud to have a full-time sports coach with a strong passion for Physical Education. Our sports coach teaches all children from Nursery through to Year 6, delivering weekly lessons that build on prior learning and demonstrate clear progression in skills and understanding.

Through PE, we promote positive play and sportsmanship. Children are expected to understand and follow rules both during lessons and throughout the wider school day, including at playtimes and lunchtimes.

We aim to instil in our pupils a strong will to succeed in all that they do. Children are encouraged to challenge themselves, embrace competition, and learn how to win and lose with respect and resilience.

All pupils take part in structured PE lessons, which are divided into physical development and games-based learning. Lessons are carefully broken down into key skills so that every child has the opportunity to practise and develop at their own pace. This inclusive approach ensures all children feel valued, confident, and engaged.

Effective questioning and the use of subject-specific vocabulary are encouraged throughout lessons, enabling pupils to communicate ideas clearly and deepen their understanding of physical activity.

Implementation

    • In EYFS and Key Stage 1, PE lessons focus on developing fundamental movement skills through a range of engaging activities. These include awareness games, rolling games, throwing and catching, target games, and communication-based activities. These lessons help children build confidence, coordination, and enjoyment of physical activity from an early age.

In Key Stage 2, games lessons introduce a wider range of sports and activities, including invasion games such as football, netball, hockey, and rugby, as well as striking and fielding games like cricket and rounders.

All games lessons are carefully planned and follow a clear four-stage structure:

    Warm-up
Warm-ups focus on fundamental skills such as basic movement, coordination, spatial awareness, agility, speed, body control, reactions, and decision-making. The type, length, and intensity of the warm-up are matched to the focus of the lesson.

    Try it
Children are given the opportunity to play the game and explore the skills independently, learning through experience and identifying areas for improvement.

    Coach it
Following this, the teacher or coach provides guidance, demonstrations, and feedback to support skill development and improve technique.

    Progress it
Activities are then adapted or progressed, either for individuals or the whole class, to provide appropriate challenge and continued development.

At Moorcroft Wood Academy, children are rarely placed into traditional matches during lessons. This approach ensures that all pupils are actively involved and included, rather than more confident or experienced players dominating play. Lessons are designed to provide equal opportunities for all children to participate, practise skills, and build confidence.

Games are structured to focus on specific aspects of different sports, allowing children to develop key skills in a fun, supportive, and competitive environment. We believe in the importance of mastering basic skills before progressing to full competitive matches later in their sporting journey.

Our PE lessons are structured lessons with a steady pace in order to reinforce key

    Skills-Based Activities

    Gymnastics
During Term One, all pupils take part in gymnastics as part of their PE curriculum. Key elements taught include body control, balance, and presentation.

    • In Key Stage 1, children work towards performing a simple routine.

    Dance
During Term Two, all pupils participate in dance through PE lessons.

    • In EYFS and Key Stage 1, children explore movement through emotion, learn about changes in tempo, and perform a simple routine.
    • In Lower Key Stage 2, pupils work in small groups to explore musical beats, create their own dance warm-ups, and learn a routine.
    • In Upper Key Stage 2, children learn a more complex routine before working collaboratively in small groups to choreograph their own dances.

    Athletics
During Term Three, all pupils take part in athletics.

    • In Key Stage 1, lessons focus on skill-based running and movement games.
    • In Key Stage 2, pupils experience a wide range of athletic disciplines, including running, jumping, and throwing activities.

Impact

Children make good progress in Physical Education, in line with age-related expectations and the National Curriculum. Individual abilities and talents in PE and sport are recognised, nurtured, and celebrated, allowing every child the opportunity to succeed.

High expectations from our sports coach ensure that pupils are challenged appropriately and supported to reach their full potential. These high aspirations help to develop confidence, resilience, and a strong work ethic, preparing children for further study, future employment, and a successful adult life.
